The Peffer family made their way to Bakersfield as part of a trip touring the Southwest United States - Check out their review of Basque food experience in Bakersfield HERE.
The visitor's center and Amtrak station are located just south of the new Mill Creek park that includes a beautifully lined water way, walking paths, access to a few great restaurants and the Bakersfield Museum of Art. One of the most common questions we get in the visitor's center is 'Where can I eat within walking distance?' A few years ago the choices were slim, but after the Mill Creek redevelopment project, I am happy to report success in finding some great (and quick) eateries close by!
As most days are in Bakersfield, today the sun is shining, temperatures are nice and there is not a cloud in the sky. For lunch I decided to walk over to the new Mill Creek Deli and enjoy the surroundings. I grabbed the Friday special, a sandwich and chips for $5.50! I was in and out in 30 minutes and back over to the office after an easy five minute walk.
If you have a layover at the Amtrak station or are just looking for a nice place to walk and eat, I suggest getting over to the Mill Creek area and enjoying the great redeveloped area!
Great news - the National Street Rod Association has signed a five-year agreement to bring back its Western Nationals Plus event to the Kern County Fairgrounds. It's the longest agreement for this event in its history. Around 2,000 pre-1980 vehicles are sprawled across the fairgrounds for the event each April!

Spring and Summer means the opening of many seasonal farmers markets in Bakersfield. There are a few new markets this year, including the city of Bakersfield's market at the newly renovated Mill Creek at Central Park.

Yup, it's spring time in Kern County and with the recent rains, we are seeing reports of magnificent wildflowers blooming in the foothills surrounding the city. I was tipped off to this video of recent wildflower sightings at nearby Wind Wolves Preserve. Check out the video below and more info on the Preserve Here.
Some great news out of the Condors luncheon I attended. Team President Matt Riley announced Bakersfield will be the host for the 2011 ECHL All Star Game. It's a tremendous honor not only to the Condors, but the fans and citizens of Bakersfield. The Condors are always tops in the ECHL for attendance and I think the All Star game will be a great showcase for Bakersfield.
We look to welcome thousands of hockey fans, scouts, players and officials to Bakersfield next January!
A nice article about the Bakersfield Sound.
